At JFS testing began to see whether advanced AI could recognise the recurring dynamics of power and control in abusive relationships and respond with empathy, accuracy, and practical guidance 24/7 hour.
The early results showed promise, but also revealed the enormity of the challenge. Abuse is not only emotional or physical—it leaves behind serious trauma. To truly support these survivors, AI had to do more than listen. It had to understand the data, connect the dots, and help women turn lived trauma into self protection.
In 2025 JFS experimented new kind of AI, bringing expertise in scaling complex technology to meet real-world needs for Muslim women and children suffering domestic abuse. JFS advanced Aden from a proof of concept into a platform that blends AI with survivor-driven design, handling sensitive issues of safety, trust, and justice.

Coercive control
Coercive control is a pattern of behaviors used to dominate and manipulate someone, often through emotional, psychological, and even physical tactics. Unlike physical violence, coercive control can be harder to recognize because it relies on subtle, persistent methods to break down a person’s sense of self, independence, and freedom.
Common tactics include isolation from friends and family, monitoring daily activities, financial restriction, and threats that keep a person in fear. Over time, this can lead to trauma, reduced self-worth, and isolation from support networks.
Key Signs of Coercive Control
Isolation from others
Restricting access to loved ones and support networks.
Financial Control:
Limiting or controlling access to money and financial decisions.
Monitoring & Surveillance:
Checking texts, emails, location, and even social media.
Restricting Freedom:
Limiting time outside, access to work or education, and personal choices.
Recognising these signs is crucial in understanding when a relationship is harmful and taking steps to address it.

What is Financial Abuse?
Understanding Financial Abuse: Recognise the Signs and Reclaim Your Independence
Financial abuse is a hidden form of control that restricts a person’s access to money, independence, and basic needs. It occurs when someone uses financial resources to manipulate, isolate, or dominate another person, often in relationships where there is a power imbalance. Financial abuse can impact anyone and has devastating effects on a person’s self-worth, financial stability, and future.
From controlling bank accounts to limiting access to employment, financial abuse traps victims in dependency and fear. Recognising the signs is the first step toward taking back control and finding safety. Aden AI-powered chatbot offers a private space for those affected, guiding users toward resources, support, and steps for reclaiming their financial freedom.
Signs of Financial Abuse
Controlling Finances:
Abuser restricts access to bank accounts, credit cards, or savings, leaving the victim unable to make independent financial decisions.
Limiting Employment or Education:
Preventing the victim from working or advancing in their career, keeping them financially dependent.
Withholding Money or Basic Needs:
Denying money for essentials like food, transportation, or healthcare as a means of control.
Accumulating Debt in the Victim’s Name:
Taking out loans, credit cards, or other debts in the victim’s name, leaving them with financial liabilities.
Financial Abuse Impacts Victims
Financial abuse traps victims in abusive relationships by creating economic dependency, leading to stress, depression, and helplessness.
